Charleston Neighborhood
A little history…
While anti-German sentiment grew during World War I, Charleston’s name appears to have been coined during this time period. The name “Charleston” was likely chosen to honor Balthasar Kreischer’s son Charles, who was born in the town. Androvetteville, or Androvettetown, was the name given to Charleston by the Androvette family in 1699 when they established a small settlement here. In 1850, eight of the twenty-nine buildings in the village belonged to the Androvette family, which engaged in farming. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charleston,_Staten_Island
