Create Zones First
It may be difficult to imagine doing this task, right? How can one create different zones in a bedroom, for example? Bedrooms are used for sleeping, nothing else. Well, not quite! Besides sleeping, one performs different functions there – working, studying, reading, doing hobbies, watching TV, changing clothes, etc. When you have a room that conforms to all the previously mentioned norms, creating zones may not be necessary. But, with oddly-shaped rooms, dividing the space based on your needs can really make a difference. Choose the biggest place in your room for your bed and storage options, and use all the other awkward corners and walls for creating areas for your smaller tasks like working or studying. This is an amazing idea that will make your home more organized and neat, so give it a try.
Then, Create Symmetry
If a certain room is too oddly shaped you might want to try simple home improvements like changing the position of your non-load bearing walls or even adding a wall where necessary. There is nothing wrong with some easy home renovations, especially if you have the time and money for it! However, not all home renovations have to be time-consuming and hard on the wallet. For instance, if you have a window that is strangely shaped or placed in a strange position in a room, you do not have to replace it completely or put it in a different place. Instead, you can try to create symmetry by placing some nice-looking curtains along the entire length of the wall and all the way from top to bottom. This will create an illusion of a symmetrical window and completely balance out the entire room.
Or, Embrace the Asymmetry
Who says that you have to conform to all the norms. It is okay to be different, as long as you are comfortable and productive in your space. Try to embrace that asymmetry. Or, find a way to incorporate it into your interior design. Sometimes all you need is a bit of decluttering and furniture rearranging. Let us take that window from above as an example again – its position on the wall simply does not make sense. What you can do is add a bulky sofa opposite of it and a smaller chair on the other side of the window. That way, your oddly shaped room and window will look more aesthetically pleasing while still maintaining that asymmetry.
Do not be afraid to try different furniture arrangements until you find that perfect one – the one that suits your needs the most. But, before doing that be sure to first declutter the entire room, as it is much easier to work with a decluttered space. Also, keep in mind that oddly shaped rooms plus too much clutter are not a perfect match.
Form an Accent Area
Some people pay an extraordinary amount of money to create an accent area in the home. That is usually an area that attracts everybody’s attention and invokes feelings of admiration. But, think about it – you already have that accent area! That may be a strange-looking wall, a beam coming from the roof, a window covering almost the entire room, etc. Embrace those areas and they will become even more special. Paint that strange-looking wall in some funky color and let it be your masterpiece. Cover that beam with some lights and let it create an amazing atmosphere. Surround that big window with different plants and let it be your escape to nature. Believe it or not, but this unusual feature of your home can help you sell your home faster and easier, and also increase its value if you use them correctly.
Moreover, you do not have to create an accent area out of your strange-looking home features, instead, you can draw attention from them by creating an accent area in the middle of the room, for example. A great way to do that is to put an interesting rug. Or, to put a mesmerizing figurine on your coffee table. This way, nobody will even see your oddly-shaped angles, walls, or beams.
Pull Furniture Away From the Walls
We all have a tendency to push our furniture right next to the wall and cover it completely. After all, that is the norm. But, why follow that norm when having furniture in different places in the room can also look amazing. This works for both ‘normal’ and oddly shaped rooms! If, for instance, you have a room with strange angles where none of your furniture pieces can fit, pull them away from the walls and use those pieces to create the previously mentioned zones. Try this idea by pulling your sofa to the middle of the room and placing some chairs and reading tables behind it. That way, you will not only move your sofa from that strangely angled wall to a more convenient place but you will also create a whole new area (in this case, a reading area) behind it.
