Great Kills, Staten Island
History
The eastern part of Great Kills was named Clarendon after a British colonial governor, and the western half was Newtown. Both were were called Giffords after local commissioner and surveyor Daniel Gifford. The name lives on in Giffords Lane, Giffords Glen, and the Gifford School, P.S. 32. French settler Jacques Guyon called the location “La Grand Kills” in 1664, the last year of New Amsterdam’s Dutch colony.
Eastern Great Kills was part of Southfield, Richmond County, New York, from the 1680s until 1898, when Staten Island was incorporated into New York City. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge brought residential growth from Brooklyn to Great Kills and other East Shore areas in the 1950s.
Poillon-Seguine-Britton House was placed to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, but burned in 1989 and was demolished in 1996. Great Kills Park was designated a “Historic Aerospace Site” by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2006 to honor a 1933 rocket launch. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Kills,_Staten_Island
