Grant City, Staten Island
Despite the fact that the war was unpopular on Staten Island, which saw anti-draft riots in July 1863, the community was renamed in honor of Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant soon after it began. President Abraham Lincoln is honored with a street named Lincoln Ave., while General John C. Fremont, a former Republican presidential candidate and a Staten Island resident, is honored with a street named Fremont Ave., while President John Adams is honored with a street named Adams Avenue, and Vice President Schuyler Colfax is honored with a street named Greeley Ave (after newspaper editor Horace Greeley). The original names of several other streets have been changed to avoid confusion with historical people.
Grant City had a significant increase in the number of single-family houses built in the 1950s and 1960s when the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened in November 1964, making it much simpler for Brooklyn residents to visit the island. During the 1990s, there was a significant presence of Irish Americans. People that live near Grant City tend to vote Republican, and the city itself is a relatively conservative political climate.
