Arden Heights, Staten Island
The western portion of Annadale, a community on the South Shore of Staten Island, New York, USA, is commonly referred to as Arden Heights. Most New York City maps, including Hagstrom’s, include the neighborhood of Arden Heights.
To the east is Annadale, to the south is Huguenot, to the west is the Arthur Kill, and to the north are the Fresh Kills.
History of Arden Heights, Staten Island
Named for the hill that now stands above the Village Greens shopping center and apartment development, “Arden Heights” was created in 1886 by prominent Staten Island real estate developer Erastus Wiman. (The Fresh Kills Landfill, at the western end of Arden Avenue, is not the inspiration for the name. (The landfill did not appear until the middle of the twentieth century.)
For decades, Arden Heights was known as the location of St. Michael’s Home For Children, a Roman Catholic orphanage. However, that all changed in 1971 when Village Greens, New York City’s first planned urban development, opened there. In the late 1960s, when construction began, Mayor John V. Lindsay boasted that getting from the Greens to Lower Manhattan would take an average of one hour and fifteen minutes, which is roughly the same as it would take today to take a bus.
After the Saint Michael’s orphanage off Arthur Kill Road shut down in 1982, some of the land was sold to builders (who subsequently constructed the Aspen Knolls development), while the rest was set aside for use as a church, which was later dedicated to the freshly canonized St. John Neumann. On the east side of the property, the church maintains a convent for the Presentation Sisters. A portion of this land was sold off in 2005, and new home construction has since begun there as well, marking yet another indicator of the ongoing housing boom on Staten Island, which has persisted almost continuously since the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1964.
