For those of you who know me or have read any of my blog posts in the past, you’ll notice my fiancé and I are avid foodies and spend most of our leisure time traveling and experiencing the best chic and well-hidden food concepts. My personal love for the hospitality industry helps to explain the gravitational pull restaurant leasing and sales has had on my business. As a resident of Staten Island’s North Shore, I’ve been especially excited and bullish on the development and culinary boom of the area. Yet, I still believe both Stapleton and Saint George to be the two most undervalued neighborhoods in New York City. Here are some of the restaurants to look forward to coming to the North Shore in the upcoming months.
Flour + Oak – The newest restaurant to join the Minthorne strip; the Italian restaurant will focus on Neapolitan Pizza, fresh pastas, and a rounded-out selection of healthy dishes. Unlike most of Staten Island’s pizzerias, a different style of flour will be used, and pizzas will be cooked in a wood fire Marra Forni 900-degree oven. Total cook time of each pie will take about 90 to 120 seconds. I’ve had the rare privilege of seeing the construction develop and it’s going to be one of the most trendy spaces added to the North Shore restaurant scene. Some of the design features include a herringbone whitewashed wood ceiling with recessed lighting, distressed whitewashed brick throughout, polished concrete floors, and a 14-seat bar. These features come from a collaboration of ideas from the restaurant’s owner along with one of the designers and contractors behind Manhattan’s world-renowned bars Dead Rabbit and Black Tail. Flour + Oak is slated to open in November.
Barca– With the tremendous success of Surf at Urby, the incredibly talented ownership team decided to venture into a new project right across the way also on the water. The Italian inspired restaurant will feature a copious catch of fresh fish including crudo, whole fish and composed fish dishes, fresh pastas all made in house & a vibrant atmosphere with gorgeous bridge and city views. They’re also slated to open in the next couple of months.
Sofias Taqueria– One of the newest leases I’ve worked on in the area is Sofia’s Taqueria, which is set to take over the space most recently occupied by the Korzo Club. Peter Botros, Phil Farinacci and Ignacio Garcia partnered for this New Mexican restaurant venture which will feature an expansive taco menu, a guacamole bar, and my personal favorite: a tequila bar with over 100 plus tequilas and mezcals. You may be familiar with this group from some of their other past successes which include Stone House, Violette’s Cellar, and Corner House BBQ. They plan to join the rest of the list of North Shore restaurants to open by the end of 2018.
