Make Lists
Some of us love to have lists for everything and some people despise them, but for an event like a house move, making lists can be really beneficial to make sure you don’t miss anything.
Before employing a packaging service, like packaging services in London, it’s always a good idea to have lists of what you have in each room and where you want it to go when you unpack. This will help both you and the packers you give the job to.
List everything that needs to be done, big and small. Sometimes it can look a bit overwhelming when it’s all written down, but it really does help you to make sure everything is done.
Hire A Packing Service
By far one of the best things you can do is hire a packing service. There are different services offered, but the least stressful option is one where the packers will arrive at your home with everything needed for packing, package everything, drive it to the new destination and unpack it in the correct room at the other end, and take the waste away again.
Professional packers are just that, professionals. They are extremely efficient, so things will be done as quickly as possible – usually within a day – and packed in a way that keeps them safe from bumps and scrapes on their journey. A packing service also has good insurance too, so if anything gets damaged you are fully covered.
A packing service saves you time, and because everything is done within a day, it means you will not be living in a half packed house for several weeks before you make the move.
Cancel Your Utilities
Once you have a date for your move, it’s a good idea to let your utility companies know. This means any services that are connected to your home, like water, electricity, gas and so on. It’s important to have them cancelled on the day you move out so you don’t continue to pay money for a vacant property.
Equally, you can set about organising the set up of utilities for your new home. There’s nothing worse than moving in and realising you don’t have any electricity, or even worse, wifi!
It should only take a few phone calls, or live chats on the internet to do this, but it’s so worth it.
Redirect Your Mail
There will always be some company that you forget to tell your new address to, but postal services in most countries will offer a redirection service, so get this set up before you move.
A redirection means that any post address to your old address will automatically be sent to your new one. This takes away the worry that you will miss an important letter or bill, and also reduces the risk of identity theft.
Declutter
Even if you have the best packing company coming to do the lion’s share of the move for you, they won’t be able to declutter your home.
Moving house is the perfect time to get rid of those bits and pieces you have secreted around the house in drawers that never get opened. A good rule of thumb is that if you haven’t used it or worn it in the last twelve months, do you really need it?
This isn’t to say you should get rid of everything. There are things you will want to keep for sentimental value for example, and if they make you happy, then keep them, but do try and be strict with yourself.
This can also save you money, as the packing team will have less items to pack!
Clean!
If you can get access to your new property after the previous owners have moved out and before your possessions have been moved in, it is a good time to give your new home a deep clean.
Whether you decide to clean it yourself, or hire a cleaning company to do it for you, moving into a beautifully clean home really does make you feel better.
You will have plenty to do once your furniture is in without worrying about cleaning.
Have a First Night Box
It’s a good idea to have one with all your important documents in, and also anything that you will need for your first night in your new home.
Moving days are long and stressful, the last thing you want on that first night is trying to find the teabags. So, have the things you will need at hand, so you can awake refreshed the next day to start organising things.
Don’t Forget To Be Kind To Yourself
Moving house is stressful, and can often be emotional. It’s important to have realistic expectations about what can be achieved within what time frame.
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to have everything done and looking perfect within a day or two, that simply won’t happen, and you’ll end up feeling frustrated with yourself.
Be kind to yourself, and do things as and when you feel comfortable
As you can see, there are things that can be done to make your house move an easier process for you.
Do your research in advance of what services are best to help you, make lists of everything that needs to be done, and most importantly, enjoy being in your new home!
