Meet Gogo Bethke
Gogo Bethke came to the United States from Transylvania, Romania when she was 21 years old in pursuit of the American Dream. She came here to work as an au pair (live-in nanny) for a host family in Michigan. She had no friends or family here; the only people she knew were the family she stayed with. After her work as an au pair for a few years, she had a few odd jobs, got married, and became a stay-at-home mother. One day, a neighbor suggested she become a licensed realtor based on her motivation and bubbly personality. The rest, as they say, is history. Gogo not only became a realtor; she has surpassed realtor. She is now a coach and mentor to over 500 agents globally and runs her own real estate boot camp.
To say that Gogo Bethke has had immense success in real estate would be a disservice — especially for having been in the business for a relatively short amount of time (about a decade). In just ten years time she grew to become the “Queen of Social Media,” having amassed nearly 55,000 followers on Instagram. She is in the Top 3% of realtors in the Nation and number one on Social Media in all of Michigan. She said it all started with Facebook. She didn’t have money for lead generation or paid ads when she first got her license, so she took to Facebook and learned everything she could about branding herself on social media.
Early Life in Communist Romania
Early life in Communist Romania was difficult for Gogo as it would be for anyone. However, it was normal to her. She admits now she didn’t know any better because she had no outlet to the outside world. She relays a story from her childhood when she was eight years old. It was 1989, and Romania had just gone from communism to democracy. Her father immediately went out and bought a color tv and a VCR for her family. Her first exposure to the western world was literally watching 48 Hours with Eddie Murphy. She found him hysterical, loved the movie, and in the moment it seemed her life had changed immediately. In fact, she says, “it was like a light switch was turned on.” She recalls during Christmas that year, she received oranges, bananas, and chocolate from Germany – and it was the best feeling ever. She had never even tasted those foods before, and had no idea of what she had been missing under grip of communism.
By Process of Elimination
Gogo admits she wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to be when she grew up. Rather, she notes that she knew what she didn’t want to do. A type-A extrovert, she certainly didn’t want to sit at a desk every day from 9-5. That is why she fell in love with real estate. “Every day is different. Every client is different. Every transaction is different. No two days are alike,” she says. It’s worth mentioning that Gogo entered the real estate world in 2011, which was an incredibly difficult time for everyone. She thought to herself, “If I can make it know while the market is in bad shape, then I can certainly make it when times are good.” And that she did! In addition, Gogo also did a lot of reading – and still does. She knew in order to achieve a certain level of success, she would need multiple streams of income. She knew had a job to do, but she also knew there were numerous ways to make passive income or “horizontal money.” Gogo accomplished that, as well. Millionaires make their money through multiple streams of income, says Gogo Bethke. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, adds James Prendamano.
